Review of Barking - Sexual Health

I recently visited the hospital to have my coil removed, and I must say, the care I received from the nurse was exceptional. From the moment I walked in, she made me feel comfortable and at ease. She took the time to explain the procedure thoroughly, answering all of my questions with patience and expertise. Throughout the entire process, she exhibited a high level of professionalism and compassion, ensuring that I felt supported and cared for every step of the way. Her gentle demeanour and reassuring presence truly made a difference in my experience. Unfortunately, I forgot to get her name (black female with classes and wearing red trousers I’m describing u just in case u see this) but I wished more nurses were like u coz it’s very difficult to find someone like u working (coz normally everyone is rude…)… thank you xxx

Review of Barking - Sexual Health
8th April 2024

My father (93 years old in May) just came out of hospital following a fall and recovering from pneumonia. He complained of sores/sore red patches on his penis so I accompanied him by public transport to the Sexual Health Clinic at Barking Hospital as I had no way of telling which of the possible causes I could think of it might be - and therefore whether to treat or not - without professional advice. There were no available slots remaining in the session as the session was from 1pm to 4pm and every place was taken after less then thirty minutes from the start. However, one of the reception staff whose name began with an M and whom I think was called Marcie, asked me to wait whilst she consulted with a nurse. Marcie returned and offered my father three options. There simply were no slots available. They were all gone and Dad could not be squeezed in on the end or in between. He could wait and see but the nurse would be most unhappy with Dad at his age and infirmity waiting for 3 1/2 hrs until the end of the session hoping the nurse could see him. However, if Dad could return at 5pm or thereabouts the nurse guaranteed he would be seen as an emergency. The 1-4 clinic patients would be gone by then and the nurse would give their full attention to my dad and not to worry if he was a little late, the nurse would definitely see him. Marcie answered my questions as to nearby eateries, there did not appear to be much nearby other than the hospital itself, we shared a laugh when I said Dad's just spent 10 days' straight eating hospital food and needs a change, Dad and I left and returned shortly after 5pm and were seen. The Sexual Health Nurse introduced himself as Gio and invited us into the consultation room. Gio allowed me to speak about my concerns and ideas for how I thought the problem had arisen. He not only allowed me to speak but answered all my questions and offered the following information: one of my suggestions was that Dad for the last 20 years has lived with daily dry skin and recently changed his soap and perhaps the chemicals in that had irritated his penis. After listening to all my concerns, Gio returned to the point about the soap/cleaning agent and told Dad and I and both of us agreed later that we never knew this and the trip to the Sexual Health Clinic was not only useful because Dad was given a clean bill of health not only at the time but when the results arrived discretely later by text on his personal mobile phone - but was crucial if only for that one piece of information alone that Gio shared with us. Genitals work best when they are washed gently but thoroughly/efficiently with water alone - no soap or any other cleaner/cleansing agent - by hand once per day each morning. And that's it. It's a myth that soap is required to clean genitals, they are self-cleansing as long as they are treated correctly and then they will do the job themselves. After Gio had listened to my concerns, he turned to Dad to ask and answer questions. Then he called Jayne, an assistant/accompanying/chaperone colleague in and they went with Dad from the consulting room to the adjoining examination room and both declared Dad to be in very good condition, which is to say normal, upon medical inspection. The three of them returned to the consulting room and I was asked to leave, which I did, so they could talk in private. After they had finished they brought Dad back to the waiting room to relax and drink water until he felt in a position to provide a urine sample. All the staff afforded plenty of time to us despite the clinic running over time; there was no rush and the staff all waited until the urine sample was obtained, and stayed late at the clinic until everything that needed to be done in terms of Dad's health was completed, before we left and they locked up and were able to leave. Every member of staff I saw that day - 27/03/2024 - was kind and efficient and there is nothing any of the staff I saw in action, or in passing, or was directly involved with could have done better than they did because they either did everything that was required or they surpassed any reasonable expectation. Even the admin was good, eg Dad received all three texts, including the text showing the final results, was sent to Dad in a timely manner.

Although, as I said above, there is nothing the staff could have done better, there is definitely something Barking - Sexual Health management/funding could do to vastly improve the service, as follows: If they could beg, borrow or steal money from the government - but NOT from existing allocated funding in the Sexual Health department or any other department in the borough - and train up/employ further staff so that there are sufficient staff to meet the demand, then they must do so. Dad and I turned up around 2pm to a walk-in session that was open between 1pm and 4pm. All slots for the whole afternoon had gone within half an hour of the slots becoming available. I asked if they could squeeze Dad in but they were simply unavailable as they cannot give out seats which they do not possess. Please employ more staff and pay them a decent rate to hold on to them. The demand was intense and as I understand it the clinic is often too busy but, more's to the point, the clinic is walk-in and during the time I was there many people came in and asked for a slot and were unable to obtain one because they were all gone. One man sat at the back took umbrage at what he seemed to believe was discrimination (he was white) because other people were coming in and being seen but he had been there before them so he felt they were being given preferential treatment. There was a woman behind the counter (a second one beside Marcie) who handled the situation of that entitled man sitting down at the opposite side of the room and complaining loudly saying other people had come in after him and been invited in to be seen BEFORE him and he'd been sitting there A VERY LONG TIME. She handled him very well by keeping calm and offering all the options he had, and at the same time preventing the altercation from escalating. She was highly professional as well as well-trained and personable and there was absolutely no hint of a power play or obstructiveness and she kindly but firmly explained that those people had been in earlier and obtained their appointments and then come back before time and been seen only in their proper turn. Nevertheless if there were sufficient staff to treat in a timely manner all or at least the majority of the patients needing to be seen, the receptionist would have been spared - and the packed room full of patients waiting their turn would have been spared - the level of unpleasantness caused by the situation. Not to mention the situation of people coming in good faith between the hours of 1pm-4pm to a scheduled clinic session only to be told that all the slots were taken. Where are they supposed to go for treatment, when will they be seen when there is noone available to treat them? Will they ever be treated, will they suffer in silence, will they risk problems in the workplace due to disappearing for more appointments than necessary simply because the first few attendances failed to deliver what they need, presumably they will continue to worsen in terms of health whilst they wait for staff to treat them who have not been provided by the authorities and, should their ailments be infectious they will continue to unknowingly and preventably infect others throughout the delays to being seen. Furthermore, if the ailment is infectious but one which - such as syphillis - which subsides after a brief time of discomfort but causes dreadful consequences through remaining untreated and causes misery to both the patients and their families - again all preventable by providing sufficient staff and resources to treat the numbers of patients in need, the patient might well never return after finding no appointment available if the symptoms which prompted them to make the attendance seem to - albeit misleadingly - subside and resolve themselves whereas on the contrary the disease will take a grip and pass to any other(s) in subsequent sexual contact with that patient. It's a false economy to stint on necessary service provision.

The receptionist were friendly, lots of seating and tv on (perhaps add subtitles as it’s very quiet) I arrived early and was seen early too which was good. The nurse was extremely lovely I’d go as far as saying was the kindest and knowledgeable I’ve seen in years! Thank you to the nurse
